Thursday Night Meetings
OTMC Thursday Night Meetings
The OTMC hold an evening meeting most Thursday evenings (see below for upcoming programme). Anyone with an interest in tramping or the outdoors are more than welcome to come along and find out what the club can offer. The door is open from 7.00pm and the meeting proper starts at 7.30pm. A structured programme normally follows some short club announcements. The programme often features a guest speaker talking about a tramping or outdoor related topic. Occasionally we hold training nights on various tramping subjects.
If you are interested in finding out more about the tramping club and tramping in our area then the club nights are often the best way to do so. You can sign up for weekend trips, or talk to leaders for the upcoming day and weekend trips.
We are fortunate to own our own clubrooms which allows us to display a comprehensive map and photo collection on our walls.
Our clubrooms are located at 3 Young Street, St Kilda. Young Street runs off Prince Albert Road, the main road through South Dunedin leading to the beach. Our clubroom is identified by a large sign and is just behind the corner dairy.
Upcoming Social Programme
May 1:
Gordon Tocher - Mt Armstrong
In early February seven members of the Club travelled to Haast Pass in an attempt to get to the top of Mt Armstrong (2174m). Would the swirling cloud thwart the attempt on the peak? Would we manage to get to the nearby Brewster Glacier? Come along on May 1st and find out.
May 8:
Sue Williams - Gannets, Guillemots & Gale Force Winds: Wildlife in the UK
May 15:
Brendan Penwarden - Rope and Knot Night
May 22:
BYO Photo Night
May 29:
Antony Pettinger - Three Decades of OTMC Trips to Skippers
Sue took a trip to England, Scotland and Wales this time last year. While she was there, she did plenty of coastal walking and visited quite a few RSPB wetland reserves on the way.
Sue has collected the best together and was surprised at the interesting variety she ended up with.
No pictures of castles, royal cavalry or Roman walls - Promise!
Some cordage and just a few knots can be very handy in the backcountry and also adds quite a bit of safety out there.
We will discuss cordage options, rope care, the practical uses of the knots that you’re most likely to use, how to tie them, and how to recognise that they’re tied correctly.
It is common for people to learn how to tie a knot but then forget how so there will also be several tricks on how to remember to tie these knots.
There will be plenty of rope and tape available on the night so you’ll have a chance to see and practice all of the knots that we will cover.
There have only been a dozen or so
club trips to Skippers in our 100+ year history, with road
access being the main deterrent. This night will look back at
four of these trips from 1986, 1993, 1994 & 2006 - each of
these have a different story to tell.
